Three straightforward steps
How to Search for a Domain Name
Start with a candidate. Finish with a name you understand and an order you have checked.
Enter your name
Type a name or complete address, without a page path such as /contact. Submit the form to check it.
Compare your options
Review availability, first-year cost and renewal. If the name is taken, try a distinctive variation or another suitable ending.
Make it yours
Check the spelling and order total before payment. Wait for successful registration confirmation before announcing your address.
More than one way to be found
Explore Domain Extensions
Compare the published domain guides below for prices and registration details. Each ending is a separate registration: owning one does not automatically secure the others.
Choose a name people can use
Make Your Domain Easy to Remember
A good candidate works in a conversation as well as in a browser. Think about how customers will hear it, type it and recognise it in an email.
Before you search
- Start with the name customers know. Use the trading or project name you actually intend to promote.
- Keep spelling straightforward. Read the address aloud and ask whether someone could type it without an explanation.
- Allow room to grow. Avoid tying the name to a temporary product or location unless that limitation is intentional.
If your first choice is taken
- Add something meaningful. A service or descriptive word can distinguish the name without making it confusing.
- Compare suitable endings. A different extension can work, provided it fits your audience and registration requirements.
- Check for brand confusion. Availability is not permission to use somebody else’s protected name or identity.
Your address is just the start

Instant Domain Search FAQs
What to know before searching, comparing and registering your next address.
How do I check whether a domain is available?
Enter the candidate in the search form and submit it. Read the returned status for the complete address, including its extension. A suggestion alone is not a registration confirmation.
Does Instant Domain Search check while I type?
This page uses the Truehost search form: enter your candidate and select Search. It does not run a separate availability check after every keystroke. Response time depends on the search service and the extension being checked.
Is searching for a domain free?
You can explore names without placing a registration order. A purchase begins only when you choose to continue and complete checkout; review the amount and conditions before paying.
Why is the domain I want unavailable?
It may already be registered, reserved or subject to restrictions. An unavailable result does not necessarily mean there is a working website at that address. Try a distinct candidate rather than assuming an unused-looking name is free.
Should I choose .co.uk, .uk or .com?
Choose for the audience and identity you want to build. A UK-facing business may consider .co.uk or .uk; a project serving multiple markets may prefer .com. Compare the exact names and recurring costs instead of choosing on the first-year price alone.
Can I search before my website is ready?
Yes. Name selection and website development are separate tasks. Once a registration is confirmed, you can arrange the hosting or website service and connect it later. Keep track of renewal even if you have not launched.
Does an available result hold the name for me?
No. Another applicant may register the address before you finish. Wait for successful registration confirmation before treating the name as secured or announcing it as your new business address.
What if I already own the domain?
You do not need to register it again. If you want Truehost to manage it, use the domain transfer page and check the procedure for its extension. Moving registrar and moving website content are different jobs.
